Will Rain Spoil My Windows After a Window Clean?

It’s a reasonable worry, and if you’ve ever seen freshly cleaned windows look streaky and spotted after a single rain shower, you’d be right to think twice. But the spotting isn’t really the rain’s fault. It’s what the rain is picking up on its way down the glass.

The Actual Reason Rain Spoils Some Windows (and Not Others)

When rain hits clean glass on its own, it dries clean. The water evaporates and there’s nothing left behind. The problem starts when rain runs off something dirty before it gets to your window, and on most Perth homes that means three culprits.

Days are shorter, the sun sits lower, and you’re spending more daylight hours indoors. Dirty windows cut natural light noticeably more than people expect, a film of grime and water spotting can knock a room’s brightness down by a meaningful amount. Through summer you barely notice because the sun is so strong it pushes through regardless. In winter, with weaker, lower-angle light, the difference between clean and dirty windows is the difference between a bright room and a gloomy one.

Cooler conditions are better for the work. Mild, overcast weather is actually ideal for window cleaning. There’s no harsh sun flash-drying water on hot glass, which is what creates streaks. The job often finishes cleaner in winter than in 38-degree January heat.

You’re set up for spring. Coming out of winter with clean windows means the first warm, sunny day shows your home or business at its best, not exposing every smear the moment the sun hits.

Frame mould stays manageable. Damp conditions encourage mould and algae on south-facing window frames. Tackling it early stops it spreading into seals and rubber gaskets, which is where it gets expensive to fix.fix.

A Note on Safety in Wet Conditions

Wet roofs, slippery paving and unstable ladder footings are not a DIY job in July.
